She’s played the quirky and lovable Jesse Day on New Girl since it’s inception in 2011.
And now Zooey Deschanel is opening up about the series finale of the fun-loving comedy, which aired it’s last episode on Tuesday night.
While the season finale saw Jess finally marry her roommate and on-off boyfriend Nick Miller (played by Jake Johnson), Zooey revealed in an interview with Deadline that she also envisioned a darker path the couple could have taken.

‘I liked it. I thought there was another version that could’ve been a little bit more dark—not like dark, horrible, but it was always kind of like, do Nick and Jess end up together?’
‘I thought there could’ve been a version where they don’t, and it’s more bittersweet. But I love this version, too. It’s more in the realm of the romantic comedy that I think this show really probably is at its heart.’
While the finale appeared to hint at the future of the characters, Zooey admits she really can’t predict what’s in store for the former roommates.
‘I don’t know where they’ll end up. Part of the fun thing is that people get to imagine that, you know?’

Ever since New Girl premiered in 2011, Zooey’s gone through a divorce, a second marriage, and has given birth to two children.
And the actress admits it’ll be tough to say goodbye to New Girl, which has been her foundation through all these changes.
‘It’s kind of like high school, where it’s this thing that has been a constant in my life for seven years,’ she told the website. ‘It’s been with me [as] I got married, I had two kids, and all these people, I’ve become close with— the cast and the crew.
The whole gang! Deschanel starred alongside Lamorne Morris, Johnson, Hannah Simone, and Max Greenfield
‘It’s been kind of like the center of my life for so long, so it’s really important for me, personally as well as professionally.’
